SMA: A “Rare” Disease
Lorson describes Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or SMA, a pediatric neurodegenerative disease that affects children. Thought by many to be a “rare” disease, SMA is unfortunately quite common, occurring once in every six thousand live births worldwide. A devastating diagnosis, SMA is the leading cause of infantile death.
The UMRB grant allowed us to establish ourselves in new areas. With this support, we were able to win two large NIH awards, which are now the foundation of our lab.
