X-rays and Space Charge Limits
Exploring medical uses for plasma, Rovey illuminates the real benefits behind teaching old machines new tricks. Traditional x-ray machines are space-charge limited; they can only pull a limited number of electrons from their thermionic source, requiring a lot of energy and producing a lot of heat. On the other hand, the plasma is "space-charge neutral, which means that there are not just electrons in the system, there are actually positive ions too, and they help cancel out the negative charge," which lowers energy requirements.
The UMRB grant was instrumental—it was just last year, and it has led to two funded projects so far.
