Much of Clancy Martin’s work wonders at the real value of self-knowledge, asking whether it adds not only to knowledge or awareness, but whether it makes one more or less moral. “Since before Socrates, we had this idea,” he explains, “and Nietzsche thinks that this is mistaken.”
