Slave Owners in Missouri
Mutti Burke’s research covers slave-owners as well as slaves, examining their strategies in a border state. Small slaveholders were at risk for falling out of slave-owning at any time due to lack of funds; there was also the rising conflict of the Civil War.
Teaching and mentoring students takes a tremendous amount of energy. The UMRB allowed me to dedicate time to work on a book manuscript.
