Small Slaveholding in Missouri
Missouri’s small slaveholding system represents an untapped source for the study of slavery, yet it is this very system that makes the state so important to Mutti Burke’s research. The size and dynamics of the system dramatically affected the relationships between slaves and owners, making the experience of slavery in Missouri very different from that typical in Southern states.
Teaching and mentoring students takes a tremendous amount of energy. The UMRB allowed me to dedicate time to work on a book manuscript.
